my top 5 underrated movies:
1. Sunshine – Danny Boyle makes an existential movie about astronauts trying to reignite the sun. it is perfect.
2. 4 – “portrays russia in a bad light” is not an excuse for not seeing this. civilization and industrialization in all its surreal, orchestral horror.
3. Jarhead – marines get pumped to fight in the first gulf war. malaise ensues, topped off with a violently beautiful burning of an oil pipeline.
4. Running Scared – everybody goes into this movie thinking, “this shit’s gonna suck” and goes out thinking, “that was the best movie ever made”.
5. Kairo - the American remake just didn’t get it. this weird apocalyptic movie is the best J-horror i’ve ever seen.
my bottom 5 overrated movies:
1. Y Tu Mama Tambien – and the point of this movie is…?
2. Pan’s Labyrinth – i suppose for the unimaginative, it’s brilliant.
3. The Motorcycle Diaries – marxism-lite, for the dieting commie.
4. Donnie Darko – he’s not that smart, and neither is the “trick”.
5. House of Flying Daggers – i don’t pay for my sappy asian dramas.
